Cancer Alliances and Careology join forces for a prehabilitation cancer care programme

March 10, 2023

We are thrilled to announce Careology's involvement in a new innovative cancer prehabilitation programme. The first-of-its-kind collaboration means people newly diagnosed with cancer will benefit from digital support and care while they wait for treatment.

The East of England Cancer Alliance has funded a new prehabilitation cancer care programme, in partnership with James Paget Hospital, Macmillan Cancer Support and Careology.

The programme offers free exercise, advice on diet and nutrition, smoking or alcohol cessation support, and mental wellbeing sessions to all newly-diagnosed cancer patients to prepare them for treatment and help improve their quality of life. Colorectal cancer patients will initially take part in the programme at James Paget as well as lung, melanoma and upper gastrointestinal patients at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust.

Paul Landau, CEO of Careology, said:

“We are honoured to be part of this ground-breaking partnership - the very first of its kind between a cancer alliance, an NHS Trust, a charity and a tech company. Seeing these different parties come together to collaborate and co-develop patient-first cancer care is enormously exciting and everyone at Careology is proud to be playing their part.”

Careology was chosen as the best digital cancer care solution by the patient group, based on a number of criteria including ease of use and functionality. Virtual support will be provided whenever needed, with patients able to access trusted and personalised information from Macmillan Cancer Support, which is pulled through a new interface. The Careology platform will also provide a ‘virtual ward’, with remote insights and data to allow clinical teams to monitor patients, helping to provide early visibility of issues and support with triage.

Lisa Motley, Programme Manager said:

“The partnership with Careology and the James Paget Hospital enables us to deliver on the personalised care ambitions of the NHS Cancer Programme and to reinforce clinical care digitally in line with the NHS Long Term Plan.”

A patient involved in shaping the programme commented:

“Knowing I can now help myself before I start my treatment is such a relief. It’s a really scary time when you’re waiting to receive treatment. The new prehabilitation programme and the app from Careology will now give me a sense of control and purpose.”

By using Careology's cutting-edge data and technology platform right at the start of the cancer journey, it enables patients to feel supported and in control whilst they wait for treatment. There is a growing body of evidence that demonstrates how impactful intervention can be at this stage of care, often resulting in better treatment outcomes in recovery. Up to ten patients per prehabilitation clinic day will be introduced to the digital service with a total of 800 patients expected to benefit in the first wave.

Today’s news follows a string of high-profile tie-ups between Careology and a number of leading healthcare organisations, including Aviva, Nuffield Health, RedArc, Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust - one of the leading centres in the UK for cancer treatment and research. Careology is a strategic partner of Macmillan Cancer Support, providing a direct line through the Careology app to call the Macmillan Support Line, to receive psychological support.

About Careology

Careology is building the world’s leading digital cancer care platform. By equipping and seamlessly connecting patients, caregivers and healthcare teams in a complex pathway, our mission is to use technology to transform traditional cancer care and change everyone’s cancer story for the better. Today the platform allows patients to manage and navigate all aspects of treatment from their device, while leveraging critical data on symptoms, medications, side effects and more, to deliver insight and analysis to clinical teams through a ‘virtual ward’. By increasing the potential for patients to self-serve, improving workflows, making 24/7 monitoring possible and putting a unique data set to work, we are helping to relieve pressure on health systems, while reducing costs, improving patient and clinician experience, and optimising health outcomes.
